Exploring the Croatian island of Korcula Korcula, Croatia, July 2011. A nun cleans up in front of the Cathedral of Korcula old town. Korčula is laced with hidden coves, rolling hills and a walled medieval town. The green forests that cover Korcula inspired the Greek settlers to call the island Korkyra Melaina (Black Korčula). It is the largest island in an archipelago of 48, off the Dalmatian coast near Dubrovnik and has plenty of opportunities for scenic drives, hiking tours and boat trips to the outlying islands.
